Chapter 464:

A gentle smile played on Rylie’s lips as she closed the passenger door, then slipped behind the wheel and steered them away from the school grounds. Laughter and easy conversation filled the space as they drove through the evening.

“You and your mom are truly special,” Rylie said, her tone sincere. “Your family’s farm helped me a lot. Treating you kindly is the least I can do.”

The “Snow Mint” was extremely valuable, and Rylie would need to purchase it in large quantities later. Today’s gifts were really nothing in comparison. Her eyes flickered to the bundles in Melany’s lap. “I hope the clothes fit. Everything’s in a standard size, but you’re so petite.”

A shrug and a hopeful grin crossed Melany’s face. “It’s alright. If anything’s loose, I’ll just take it in at home. I’m sure I’ll make them work.”

A flicker of surprise crossed Rylie’s face. “You really know how to alter clothes?” Most kids in Crolens grew up with every comfort — they wouldn’t have a clue about stitching or hemming.

Melany’s smile faltered, her mood dipping as old memories resurfaced. “Back when Zaylee first joined our class, we actually bonded over a shared love of fashion and design.”

At the time, Melany had no idea Zaylee was part of the wealthy Morgan family. She had simply assumed that this unassuming new girl came from the same humble background — someone who had to patch hand-me-downs or make her own clothes out of necessity.

“Did you end up making a lot of your own outfits?” Rylie asked, curiosity piqued.

A bashful nod was Melany’s reply. “I sketch up ideas and then sew them together on my machine. I haven’t had any real training yet — hopefully, I’ll get the chance when I’m in college.”

“Zaylee and I always dreamed of going to design school together,” Melany added, her voice soft as she turned her gaze to the passing scenery. “I really thought we could be friends.”

Rylie’s words were simple and steady. “A girl from a small town, dazzled by city lights, can easily lose her way.”

That made Melany glance over. “Her mom indulges her every whim. No wonder she acts like that. Still, I can’t see Mr. Morgan ever falling for someone like Zaylee.”

“His feelings might not be the deciding factor,” Rylie replied, her tone even. “If his grandfather thinks they should be together, that’s what will tip the scales.”

Disbelief crossed Melany’s face. “I just can’t get behind that old-fashioned way of thinking. Giving up your own happiness just to please your elders?”

A faint smile tugged at Rylie’s lips, but she stayed silent, her gaze steady and untroubled.

For many, a promise made by an elder — especially one tied to saving a life — was inviolable. Sean had devoted himself completely to keeping Brad alive, creating a debt so deep that Brad knew he could never repay it.
