Chapter 491:
Beal’s brows furrowed. “Why didn’t you give him a second dose back when it happened?”
“There were too many eyes watching. It wasn’t easy to act. Besides, if an idol of his level gets into an accident, they would conduct an investigation. If a second dose of the dangerous chemical had been administered, professional doctors would find out.” She lowered her voice. “And then our involvement would’ve been exposed.”
Word of the concert incident had already reached the higher-ups. They’d caught the fan who spiked Vincent’s drink. The media had been silenced, but fans at the venue had seen too much. Vincent’s condition hit them hard. Now, they were gathered outside HaloFlow Hospital, waiting for news.
But soon enough, the hospital would make a statement. They’d confirm that Vincent wasn’t a patient there.
Everything would unravel.
Beal’s shoulders dropped. The disappointment on his face said it all. He pulled his hand away and let out a soft breath. “Forget it. This is where it ends for me. I’ll turn in my resignation.”
Elaine’s heart raced. She grabbed his hand quickly. “You don’t have to go. I can support you. Just live here with me.”
He looked at her. “You’d support me? What kind of man would I be if I let that happen? I love you. But I can’t bring you down with me. I wanted to stand strong, to protect you and give you everything you wanted. But that dream’s gone now.”
Beal forced a smile that didn’t reach his eyes as he continued, “I’ll go back to my hometown, find work, and live like everyone else. But if that’s the case, I don’t deserve you anymore. I’ve already let myself down. You should be with someone who can love you the way I couldn’t.”
“No! I won’t let this happen!” Elaine wrapped her arms around him, feeling the tremble in his frame. Her chest tightened, like something inside her was tearing apart.

She’d never been praised for her looks, but Elaine had made it in the entertainment world by sheer grit and talent. Most of her life had gone into building her career. Now that she was approaching forty, those she respected looked down on her for being too plain. After years of seeing beauty everywhere, she couldn’t bring herself to admire someone who wasn’t easy on the eyes.
But Beal — with his youthful charm, striking features, and eyes that always searched for her — he had her completely under his spell.
His warmth wrapped around her like a trap she never wanted to leave. Losing him wasn’t an option.
“What else can we do? It’s not like you can take the blame for me.” Beal leaned closer, his voice low. “If this all comes out, they’ll just blame you for being careless. Maybe you’ll lose your job. But I’ll take the chance to step up. I’ll be the one to support us. I’ll make sure I’m the only one you ever need.”
Then he sighed and continued, “But maybe it’s pointless. You’re too proud. You’d never rely on me for good.”
His words stirred something inside her.
Elaine suddenly lifted her head. “I can handle it! I love you! As long as one of us still has a job, isn’t that enough?”
