Chapter 526:

“I made Grandpa worry,” she murmured, her head dipping slightly, guilt flickering in her eyes.

“All of us worry about you,” Marcus said, his glance lingering on the white wrappings around her arm. “No matter what’s happening, remember that your safety comes first. Your life is worth more than anything. You don’t have to prove you’re brave.”

“Exactly!” Deandre’s voice still carried heat. “If you ever run into something like that again, you run. You run as far as you can. Leave it to the people trained for it. That’s not your job. Do you understand?”

He reached toward her, as if to ruffle her hair, but stopped short when he saw the pallor of her face and the bandages. His hand hovered in mid-air before he settled for a gentle pat on her uninjured shoulder.

She noticed the shadows under his eyes and suddenly remembered. “Deandre, did you sort out your lab problem?”

The last time, when someone had called him, she had only caught pieces of the story — something had gone wrong with the lab, and she wasn’t sure if it had been resolved.

At her question, his brow tightened. “No. I still haven’t pinpointed the problem. I’ve only managed the compensation side of it.”

She nodded slightly. “Is there anything I can do?”

“Your job is to rest,” he replied quickly. “I’ve already brought in a team of top biology and medical PhDs from Kellon Medical University. They’ll fix it for my team.”

Her brows lifted faintly. That was the same university where she planned to pursue her graduate studies.

“Don’t keep focusing on Deandre or anyone else,” Felix said as he stepped forward, a folder in his hand. “This is the Nexus Future business project proposal. Read it when you can. Learn a little.”

It was clear he wanted to shift her thoughts in a different direction.

She reached to take the folder, but just then, a sudden noise burst from the doorway. Deandre’s head snapped toward it, his frown deepening. He turned to the bodyguard who had pushed the door open. “What’s going on?”

“Sorry, Mr. Owen,” the guard said, struggling to hold someone back. “A woman showed up out of nowhere — won’t leave.”

Before he could finish, the woman broke free. She stumbled inside, her voice raw and full of grief as she cried out to the one lying in bed. “Sweetheart! My sweetheart!”

Rylie froze, her eyes locking onto the woman. “You…”

At the door, three bodyguards held their ground, struggling to contain the woman as they attempted to drag her away.

“Stop!”

Rylie shoved the blanket aside, swinging her legs toward the floor so quickly that the IV in her hand tugged painfully. Deandre reacted instantly, gripping her shoulder and pushing her back. “Don’t move! You’re still hooked up to the drip!”

Felix’s stomach tightened, and he placed a hand on the blanket to stop her from sitting up again. “Rylie, do you know the woman outside? She’s acting… strange.”

Rylie’s eyes dropped to the woman’s bare, dirt-marked feet. “That’s Lucilla,” she said with a frown. “She works in the kitchen at the manor. She was the one who spotted the bears and warned me ahead of time. If she hadn’t, those students could’ve been badly hurt.”
