Chapter 630:

“Quickest route to the location of their last signal. But the winds will be brutal, and the cliff face is coated with ice. It’s a high-risk move.”

Brock spoke up with concern. “Admiral Morgan, the danger level is beyond the initial estimate. Even if you manage to enter, extraction will be another serious challenge.”

“Haven’t I faced enough danger already?” Brad cut him off sharply. “If I paused for fear every time, I wouldn’t have come this far. If the risk seems unbearable to you, stay in camp and wait.”

Brock shot back without hesitation, “I’m going with you, Admiral Morgan! I’m not backing down from this!”

The tent was filled with the low hum of voices, debates, updates, and streams of data stretching into the frigid night.

Brad absorbed every word, analyzing each angle, discarding flawed options one by one until a plan emerged—a perilous strategy, but the one offering the greatest chance of success, backed by multiple fallback measures.

His tone was solemn as he addressed the group. “Anyone with a family, stay behind and wait for my following command. Only those unattached will move with me into the mountains first. Make ready!”

They all understood the grim reality. This was a mission without the certainty of coming back alive.

Watching Brad’s unwavering stance, someone finally voiced the question lingering in the air. “Is it truly worth gambling everything for one woman?”

“Not only for Rylie,” Brad shot back. “Do you even understand why Felix is so determined to uncover those mineral veins? He’s fighting to break foreign monopolies, to produce domestic chips, to end dependency on others. Everything he’s doing serves the nation, so why wouldn’t I protect him?”

His response crushed any remaining objections.

When the final details were settled, night had already fallen.

Outside, the wind howled and snow lashed against the tent walls with relentless force.

Pressing his fingers to his aching temples, Brad moved past Rylie’s tent, catching the faint glow of light within. His brows knit together before he turned and stepped through the small entrance.

Inside, the portable heater gave off a low hum, yet the chill lingered enough for breath to mist in the air.

Rylie was still awake. Leaning against her improvised bed, she pored over the initial mineral vein reports from Felix’s team, the glow of the lamp casting sharp lines across her face. She was so absorbed in her work that she didn’t register Brad’s arrival.

“Why are you still up?” His voice carried a trace of exhaustion, rough around the edges. “Tomorrow will take every ounce of strength. You should be resting.”

Only then did Rylie lift her gaze, her complexion pale beneath the lamplight. “I’m checking the figures. Something doesn’t add up — the radioactive elements are dispersing faster than expected because of the weather. I think…”

Before she could complete her thought, Brad closed the distance and smoothly took the tablet from her grasp. Gathering the notes and pen she had been using, his fingers brushed against hers by accident. The biting chill on her skin made his brow tighten at once.
