Chapter 828:
“They believe their son has lost his way and want to start over by adopting a child,” Johnny said calmly. “Looks like Mylo’s about to be kicked out for real this time.”
Isabella’s eyes widened. “His parents would really go that far?”
Johnny didn’t seem the least bit surprised. “Mylo’s always been a restless, unconventional type. After years of studying abroad, he grew detached from his family. And with their vast business empire, they can’t afford to hand it to someone ruled by emotions and impulses.”
Isabella frowned. “So they labeled him that just because of his involvement with Paola?”
Johnny shook his head. “No. A report surfaced online early this morning, but we didn’t get it right away since we were out at sea with no signal. I just learned that the authorities found dozens of women’s bodies buried on the mountain estate owned by the Malvren factory boss, Laurel’s long-time business partner.”
Isabella and the other young women from influential families drew sharp breaths, their faces filled with disbelief.
“Does that mean Laurel might actually be tied to murders and a cover-up? She’s that vicious?”
“And Paola, how much better could she be than her mother? They’re cut from the same cloth.”
“No wonder the Perry family are cutting ties with their son. Getting mixed up with that crowd is practically inviting scandal,” someone muttered.
Johnny lowered his voice. “The Morgan family’s stocks have been plummeting lately, and the public’s calling for Brad to step down. If he actually gives in to the pressure, what happens to the company then?”
Isabella responded without hesitation. “What else can they do? Don’t the Morgans have another son ready to take over?”
Johnny didn’t answer, his gaze drifting toward Rylie.

The meaning behind it was clear — it was time for her to let go. Staying close to Brad could drag her into the mess.
Rylie quietly placed her wineglass onto a passing servant’s tray. “It’s getting a bit stifling in here. I’m going to take a walk.”
“I’ll go with you,” Johnny offered quickly.
“There’s no need,” Rylie replied, her tone composed. “This event has half the women here because of your reputation. You should make the most of it.”
Johnny’s lips tightened. “Rylie, I just…”
“You’re not suited for me,” Rylie cut in. “It might sound cruel, but if saying it spares you from those unrealistic thoughts, then it’s better this way.”
Johnny stood rooted to the spot, unable to move as she walked away. At last, he burst out, “What’s so great about Brad? He’s nowhere near my level right now.”
Rylie halted and turned slightly, her eyes cool and composed. “You are a good man, Johnny, but to me, you’ll never be his equal.”
Johnny clenched his fists. “Is it because I’m not as strong? Not as good in a fight? I’ve got the brains. I could earn enough to pay someone like him to protect you and me. He’s nothing special!”
His voice rose with frustration, echoing through the hall and drawing curious glances from the nearby guests, even a few of the elders.
