Stella frowned. “Hewasn’tmad about that? Thenwhydidhescareyou?”
Even someone likeStella, who usuallyhadno interest in gossip, couldn’t help getting curious now.

“I thought Victorwasn’t… functional inthatdepartment?Guysaresuper sensitive about that kind of thing. You touched him and he still didn’tgetmad?”
Abraham walked in just in time tohearthatlastpart.
And instantlyregrettedit.
That mouth of hers–first corrupted by Marie, then infected by Eddie. No saving it now.
Tessahesitated, hervoiceguilty, but clearly joining thegossipfestherself. So much for those intense vows she’d madeearlier-completely forgotten now.
But before spilling anything, she made sure to double–check that the door was locked.
“Hey,let me tell you… I think he really might not be.”
Stellaperked up. “Oh? Go on.”
Back when she and Marie talked about it, it had all just been speculation. None of them had any solid proof one way or the other.
But the way Tessa said “might,” it didn’t sound like a guess. It sounded like a fact.
Tessa cleared her throat. “Well, I wiped him down forever last night, and he didn’t react at all.”
Stella blinked. “Yeah, that’s definitely a no–go.”
Whata waste ofsuchaperfectface.
“But then what exactly did you do today to get on his bad side?” For her to bethisscared, it had to be serious.
Wait–didn’t Stella call her again last night?
She’d been half–asleep… what had she told her?
Tessa mentioned the fever meds, and Stella vaguely remembered saying…
“Take a few more“?!
Stella’s face twitched. She cut in before Tessa could say anything else. “Wait. How many fever pills did you give Victor last night?”
Ohno.
She’d seriously been so out of it she’d told Tessa to give himextrameds?
He could’vediedfrom that!
Her brain went blank, silently praying that Tessa had enough sense not to follow that advice.
Tessa muttered, “Just one. I figured you were half–asleep when you said that.”
Stella exhaled, relief flooding through her. “Good. That’s good.”
Ohthankgod…
If he’d takenseveralof those, even someone as tough as Victor might’ve ended

“Then what did you do this time to set him off?”
It wasn’t the fever treatment. Itwasn’tthe meds.
Then what the hell was it?
Tessa groaned. “He fired the cook and made me cook instead.”
“You can’t cook.”
Other than boiling some porridge–and people couldn’t live on porridge forever.
“Exactly. I told him I couldn’t. But he still made me do it, so I figured I’d make some pasta.”
“That’s something you can do.”
She’dmessedit up before, but she’d succeeded too. Shouldn’t have been a big deal.
“Ican. But today, for some reason, I messed it up twice.”
Wait,what?
“Youmesseduppasta?”
“First time, I burned it.”
How do you burn something that’s boiled in water?
“Second time, it turned into this weird mush. Like a noodle pancake.”
Stella winced. “Seriously?”
This girl was truly one of a kind.
“And then–worst part–I think I added salt twice.”
“Wouldn’t that make it super salty?”
“Exactly! Lewis took one bite and spat it out on the spot. Like I’d poisoned him or something.”
And he couldn’t even hold it back in front of Victor?
Wait–Lewis. She remembered now. Wasn’t he supposed to be working under Abraham?
But Abraham had rejected him–said he was too weak, too chatty.
And now hewaswith Victor?
Yeah, that tracked. Definitely Eddie’s disciple. If he looked any more like him, they’d be twins.
“So did Victor blow up at you?”
Just for screwing up pasta? That seemed a little much.
“No, he wasn’t mad at me.”
“Then?”
“Iwasjust scared.”
The kind of guy who might kill someone if you pissed him off–how could shenotbe afraid?
Hearing that, Stella suddenly didn’t know what to say.
Fairenough.
