He hadn't meant to. When he noticed the red scald mark blooming on Jenna's hand, a wave of worry washed over his face. "Auntie Jenna," he exclaimed. Jenna looked down at her soaked designer outfit, and fury surged within her. This little bear was just as troublesome as Wendy. "What’s going on?" James suddenly asked as he entered the ward. Jenna immediately swallowed the food Wendy had mocked and put on a wronged expression. "Ethan didn’t mean it. It must be because the couple didn't taste good. Don’t blame him."
She tried to hide her scalded hand behind her back but couldn't suppress a soft hiss of pain. James stepped forward, took her hand, and frowned. "Ethan, how could you be so thoughtless? Cooking is Celeste's job. Auntie Jenna went out of her way to make something for you, and you caused this." Her delicate hand was now covered with a red burn, a sight that tugged at one's heartstrings. Ethan shrank under his scolding, shame washing over him.
His eyes turned red as he choked out, "I’m sorry, Daddy... I’m sorry, Auntie Jenna... I didn’t mean to." Jenna winced slightly, putting on a pained expression as she smiled at Ethan. "It's alright, Ethan. I don't blame you." James didn’t even look at Ethan as he pressed the nurse call button, instructing Celeste to clean up the mess on the floor. Soon, the nurse arrived. "Her hand needs to be bandaged," James said plainly. The nurses exchanged subtle glances.
After all, they had rushed over, thinking something had happened to Ethan. However, this was a hospital, and they brought out the first-aid kit to treat Jenna's burn. Ethan curled up on the bed alone, watching them pitifully. Just then, Wendy arrived, worried that something had happened to Ethan again. However, what unfolded was entirely unexpected.
Inside the ward, James held Jenna's wrist with tender concern, while Ethan sat neglected at the side, silently weeping. After hearing the nurses' explanation, Wendy's expression slowly calmed. In the end, she didn’t even step into the ward; she simply turned around and left. Jenna caught a glimpse of Wendy and contemplated for a moment before saying, "James, I think I just saw Wendy. Why didn’t she come in to check on Ethan?" She tightened her grip on her wrist and cast a cold glance toward the door.
"She has no right to come in." His brisk, dismissive words filled Jenna with secret delight. She turned to look at Ethan and sighed. "Exactly. If she truly cared about Ethan, she wouldn’t be insisting on divorcing you, and she definitely wouldn’t have left him behind." Ethan's eyes widened at those words, and a wave of emotion overwhelmed him. He soon burst into loud sobs. Celeste tried to comfort him, but he pushed her away with all his strength. "I don’t want you! I don’t want you!" Jenna feigned calm, ignoring the pain in her hand as she pulled Ethan into her arms. Then she turned to Celeste. "Do you know how to take care of a child?"
Celeste had finally had enough. She looked at James and said, "Mr. Frank, I quit. Keep the pay." James frowned, but before he could respond, she had already walked out of the room.
Just as Wendy was leaving the ward, she happened to overhear Celeste’s departing complaint. Celeste said, "It’s one thing for the child to be a bit unruly, but that woman acts like she owns the place. If this keeps up, the kid is going to end up completely out of control." Wendy paused and glanced back at the ward calmly.
Ethan was young, but he wasn’t stupid, and he wasn’t easily fooled. Since he had made his choice and clearly sided with Jenna, any last trace of hope Wendy had formed was now gone. The following days became a challenge for James, as there was no nanny to care for Ethan. He found himself completely overwhelmed. Before they hired a nanny, he hadn’t realized just how much of a handful Ethan could be.
These past few days, he was preoccupied with Ethan's tantrums, unable to focus on work at all. Teddy glanced at James through the rearview mirror. "You've been going back and forth between the hospital and the company, barely going home. Since it's hard to find a nanny now, how about asking Frank to take care of Ethan for a few days?"
James opened his mouth, but his agitation was clear. "This is only temporary because she’s not here."
"If you bring it up again, I’ll just leave you." He recalled how well everyone had always been taken care of when Wendy was around. Freddy wisely fell silent. "I’ll find a suitable nanny for Ethan as soon as possible."
The car came to a stop outside the hospital, and James felt strangely reluctant to open the door and head to the ward. He sighed deeply. As he looked up, he saw Wendy walking side by side with a colleague into the hospital.
Her face lit up with a smile that hadn’t appeared in years. James was taken aback as he looked at Wendy's face, which he once thought was indifferent. Now, he saw it differently; it wasn’t indifference. It was a unique charm, hard to overlook, along with her gentle expression. Even though she wore a plain white coat, lacking any real styling, it still couldn’t hide the curves of her body.
James knew better than anyone just how amazing Wendy was and how irresistibly alluring she could be when no one else was watching. But now, the woman who once had eyes only for him seemed to be drifting further and further away. "Mr. Frank, we've arrived," Freddy reminded him softly. James snapped back to reality. As he got out of the car, an inexplicable surge of frustration colored his every movement.
